Getting Started with Panopto Focus

What is Panopto Focus? Panopto is a “Lecture Capture System” or LCS. It allows faculty to record a lecture, which is then automatically uploaded to the iSchool Panopto server. Faculty can then provide their students with a URL for viewing the lecture. General product information and tutorials for Panopto can be found on the vendor’s website and on the eCampus Panopto webpage.

Checklist

  1. Review the equipment guidelines below.
  2. Request a Panopto user account by contacting Bob Lucore, and then wait until you receive your account information and temporary password via email.
  3. Log in and change your password.
  4. Download, install and configure Panopto Recorder: Windows UsersMac Users

General Settings and Information

  1. Server Address. When logging in via the Panopto Recorder, enter the following in the Server field: sjsu-ischool.hosted.panopto.com

  2. Web Portal Login Page. In some cases, you’ll need to log into the iSchool Panopto Web Portal. The portal is available at: https://sjsu-ischool.hosted.panopto.com

  3. Automatic Uploads. By default, both the Windows and Mac versions of Panopto Recorder are configured to automatically upload your presentation to the iSchool Panopto Server after the recording process has completed.

    While this is convenient, please be sure to delete any unusable recordings so as to conserve space on the iSchool Panopto server. You may check on the upload status of your recordings, as well as delete recordings, using the controls on the Recording Status screen.

  4. System Requirements for Viewing Panopto Presentations. The minimum system requirements for viewing Panopto presentations are available at:

    This information will be relevant to the students in your class who will be viewing your Panopto lectures. Please pass this information on to your students and ask them to verify that they meet the minimum system requirements.

    Please note that Panopto uses HTML5, which requires the most current version of Chrome, Firefox, Safari or Microsoft Edge.   Both students and instructors will need to use a current supported browser in order to view Panopto lectures.

Important Note: This is not an exhaustive list. Even if your AV equipment is not listed, you may still be able to use Panopto. The only way to find out for sure is to test your current AV equipment with Panopto.

Account Information and Changing Your Password

You will receive an email containing your account information, including a temporary password. You will be required to change your password the first time you log in.

After you receive your login information via email, please go to the iSchool Panopto Web Portal login page and log in using the temporary password that was provided to you.

The first time you log in, you’ll be prompted to enter a permanent password, as well as provide a security question and answer. Please make sure that you choose a security question and answer that cannot be easily guessed based on publicly available information about you.

Recording Status

Recording Status

Submitting your recording for captioning
After you have recorded a lecture and are satisfied with your results, please submit your recording for captioning. View the following tutorial for instructions.

Deleting unusable recordings
If you have recordings that are unusable (for example, failed or aborted attempts), please delete the unusable recordings in order to conserve storage space on the server.

To delete a recording, use the Delete button or action under Manage Recordings.
 

 
Allowing access to your recordings and giving the recording URL to your students
By default, access to your recording is restricted. You’ll need to allow access to your lecture before your students will be able to view it.

In addition to completing the above technical support form, you also have the option of contacting Panopto Support directly. The iSchool has a contract with Panopto which allows our faculty and students to contact Panopto Support directly. When doing this, you will be working with a technical support representative at Panopto Inc. You may contact Panopto Support using one of the following methods:
