Note: Students will be manually enrolled in the D2L class site for this course on January 20th.
The teacher librarian field experience is the final transition point in the teacher librarian credential course work. It allows the student to demonstrate their fitness for the K-12 teacher librarian credential while completing assignments in elementary and secondary school libraries under the supervision of an experienced teacher librarian. It is designed to provide the student the opportunity to test theories and to practice skills learned in the student’s program.
A supervised professional experience of school librarianship at the levels of both elementary and secondary (middle or high) schools. Emphasis is on observation and guided practice with a credentialed school librarian (library media teacher).
Prerequisites: LIBR 200, 202, 203, 204, 210, 233, 250, 263, 264 OR 265, 266, 285, plus one elective for a total of 34 credits with an appropriate GPA and no outstanding incompletes.

Student Learning Outcomes
The student should:
- The student will have an opportunity to analyze and discuss how the principles and practices of management, organizational culture and professional-related concerns are applied in a school library media center.
- The student will have an opportunity to test theories of teacher librarianship and practice skills learned in the program at both the secondary and elementary levels.
- Each student will also identify a set of learning outcomes specific to his/her field experience site.
- This should be done in cooperation with a credentialed field experience site supervisor.
SLIS Core Competencies
If the student is planning to use the fieldwork in whole or in part to meet one or more of the competencies needed to complete the program, he/she should prepare a learning outcome that addresses the area covered by a given competency. This does not mean that the statement of competency can be used for a learning outcome. An original learning outcome must be developed that will help the student fulfill a given competency through meeting the learning outcome during the fieldwork experience.
The student is required to enroll in D2L and participate in the online discussion of the fieldwork experience. Students must post a minimum of 2 times PER week. (50% of grade).
The student is required to submit the following documents throughout the term in which the fieldwork takes place:
Field Experience Log and Site Supervisor Evaluation(per each site—elementary and secondary—25% each)--67.5 hours per site. The student will maintain an on-going record of his/her activities for the field experience and be evaluated by the site supervisors (both elementary and secondary). The student is required to submit projects addressing the following areas upon completion of the fieldwork: (1) instruction, (2) selection, (3) management and supervision, (4) collaborator, (5) literature and literacies, and (6) professional behaviors.

Tentative Course Calendar
The field experience must be completed within the semester the student has registered for LIBR 295; dates for submission of the required field experience projects will be posted on D2L. With prior approval, a student may begin the field experience a few weeks prior to the beginning of the semester.

This is a Credit/No Credit course. Incompletes are considered on a case-by-case basis, and are given for family or work emergency situations.

Consent for Recording of Class and Public Sharing of Instructor Material
University Policy S12-7, http://www.sjsu.edu/senate/docs/S12-7.pdf, requires students to obtain instructor's permission to record the course and the following items to be included in the syllabus:
- "Common courtesy and professional behavior dictate that you notify someone when you are recording him/her. You must obtain the instructor's permission to make audio or video recordings in this class. Such permission allows the recordings to be used for your private, study purposes only. The recordings are the intellectual property of the instructor; you have not been given any rights to reproduce or distribute the material."
- It is suggested that the syllabus include the instructor's process for granting permission, whether in writing or orally and whether for the whole semester or on a class by class basis.
- In classes where active participation of students or guests may be on the recording, permission of those students or guests should be obtained as well.
- "Course material developed by the instructor is the intellectual property of the instructor and cannot be shared publicly without his/her approval. You may not publicly share or upload instructor generated material for this course such as exam questions, lecture notes, or homework solutions without instructor consent."
