The first day of instruction is Wednesday, January 26, and the last day of class is Tuesday, May 17.2011. The content for the course is managed through ANGEL. You will be enrolled in the Angel course for MARA 295 before the start of the term. 

Course Description

Organizational Consulting Projects are submitted by an individual or organization, supervised by a professional archivist, records manager, or other division/department manager, take more than one semester to complete, and require the student to apply at a high level the knowledge and skills developed in the program. This course is repeatable to earn six credits.

Prequisites: Successful completion of 10 required courses: MARA 200, 202, 204, 210, 211, 248, 259, 243, 249, and 256. Students must be in good academic standing [3.0 CUM GPA or above], obtain a recommendation by one MARA instructor, and receive permission of the MARA academic advisor.

Note: To be eligible for the Spring 2011 OCP course, students must have successfully completed the Fall 2010 295 (OCP) course.

Course Objectives

Student Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:

  1. Identify and demonstrate satisfactory fulfillment of an organizational consulting project, developed in consultation with the MARA program coordinator and the client. The scope of the Organizational Consulting Project is substantive such that the client would normally pay a substantial consulting fee for the level of work. (However, because this is a learning experience it is not expected that the student will be paid.)
  2. Analyze and discuss how the principles and practices of management, organizational culture and professional-related concerns are applied in the specific archives, records center, or information-based organization for which the student is completing the organizational consulting project.
  3. Compare theories of archival science and/or recordkeeping related to information retrieval, the records life cycle, and information policy with practices carried out at the client site.
  4. Demonstrate the ability to apply project management skills— including developing a project plan, identifying tasks and how goals will be achieved, quantifying resources needed, and determining budgets and timelines for completion—to a professional consulting project.
  5. Exhibit an understanding of the 8 Generally Accepted Recordkeeping Principles (GARP): accountability, integrity, protection, compliance, availability, retention, disposition, and transparency (http://www.arma.org/garp/).

MARA 295 supports the following Core Competencies:

  • D. Apply basic concepts and principles to identify, evaluate, select, organize, maintain, and provide access to records of current and enduring value.
  • E. Understand the system of standards and structures endorsed and utilized by the recordkeeping professions, particularly in the areas of electronic records and digital assets management.
  • F. Apply fundamental management theories and principles to the administration of records and recordkeeping organizations.

Course Requirements

Course Grading
This is a Credit/No Credit course that is repeatable in order to earn 6 units over two consecutive semesters. Credit for each assignment is based on satisfactory completion. Unsatisfactory completion results in No Credit for each assignment. All assignments must be completed satisfactorily to obtain credit for the course.

Incompletes: Incompletes are considered on an indivdiual basis, and are given only for family or medical emergency situations as outlined in the SJSU Catalog at http://info.sjsu.edu/web-dbgen/narr/soc-fall/rec-30.html.

Assignments
Each student is required to:

  • #1 - Conceptualize (in collaboration with client) strategies and an approach to the specific problem or need that has been identified by the client.
    • Helps to fulfill student learning objectives #1, #2, #3, and #4
    • Helps to satisfy MARA Core Competency D, E, and F
    • Grading: S if proposal agreement is made as evidenced by signatures of student and client and submitted to instructor by end of week 4.
  • #2 - Perform independent advanced –level work on an archival or records management project for a client site.
    • Helps to fulfill student learning objective #1 and #5
    • Helps to satisfy MARA Core Competency D and F
    • Grading: S if client signs off on the final project delivered by student indicating the student has conducted the project to the satisfaction of the supervisor as specified in the organizational consulting project proposal.
  • #3 - Produce recommendations, proposals, or other products (e.g. retention schedules, training programs, metadata schema) that can be implemented or used as is by the client organization.
    • Helps to fulfill student learning objectives #1 and #2
    • Helps to satisfy MARA Core Competencies E, and F
    • Grading: S if client signs off on the final project delivered by student indicating the student has conducted the project to the satisfaction of the supervisor as specified in the project proposal.
  • #4 - Enroll in Angel and participate in online discussion forums and/or discussions that take place synchronously in Elluminate related to this course.
    • Helps to fulfill student learning objective #2, #3, #4, and #5.
    • Helps to satisfy MARA Core Competencies D, E, and F
    • Grading: S if student participates in each required discussion forum in the Angel learning management system and/or synchronously within Elluminate on the dates included in the schedule and meets the basic requirements as specified in the “Evaluation of a Threaded Discussion” document in Angel (see Appendix B)
  • #5 - Maintain an on-going record of his/her work hours and activities on a Blog and provides a link that will be posted in the Angel learning management system. Specific information regarding the organizational consulting project experience documentation will be available on the Angel site.
    • Helps to fulfill student learning objectives #1,#, 2, #3, #4, and #5
    • Helps to satisfy MARA Core Competencies D, E, and F
    • Grading: S if student maintains a Blog, provides a link that can be posted in the Angel learning management system, updates it weekly throughout the course, and meets the basic requirements as specified in the “Evaluation of a Required Blogs” document in Angel (see Appendix C).
  • #6 - Prepare a status report at the end of the first semester discussing how the learning outcomes identified for the first semester of the project were (or were not) accomplished. This report will be presented to the instructor through the Angel learning management system. It must be accompanied by a form signed by the client attesting to the fact that the consultant has performed as agreed upon in the project proposal up to this point.
    • Helps to fulfill student learning objectives #1, #2, #3, #4, and #5
    • Helps to satisfy MARA Core Competencies D, E, and F
    • Grading: S if student submits this status report. The student will be expected to submit a digital file saved as a word document unless an alternative medium, such as a website, is pre-approved by the instructor.
  • #7 - Prepare a professional project final report (based upon the learning outcomes identified for the project) at the end of the second semester discussing how those outcomes were (or were not) accomplished. A copy of the final report must be submitted to the instructor through the Angel learning management system along with the final project or, in the case of a project that is not a document (e.g. an electronic records management system or database), along with access information so that the instructor can access the final project.
    • Helps to fulfill student learning objectives #1, #2, #3, #4, and #5
    • Helps to satisfy MARA Core Competencies D, E, and F
    • Grading: S if student submits this professional project final report accompanied by the final project or access information so the instructor can review the final project. The student will be expected to submit a word document unless an alternative medium, such as a website, is pre-approved by the instructor. The report must meet the basic requirements as specified in the Organizational Consulting Project Handbook for MARA 295 (see separate document).

Note: for the Spring OCP course, students will already have completed item #s 1 and 6.  The remaining items will be the focus of the Spring course.

Course Schedule

The organizational consulting project will span two semesters, and it must be completed by the end of the second semester. A detailed schedule with dates for submission of the required documents and discussion posts will be posted in Angel each term. All assignments are introduced Monday of the week indicated. Blogs and discussions are due the following Sunday, 11:55 p.m. Pacific Standard Time (PST) . Other assignments are due Sunday evening, 11:55 p.m. PST of the week in which they are listed on the schedule. The basic time frame for the fall semester will be as follows:

Note: Each student was expected to devote 135 hours to this project the first term and a minimum of 185 hours this 2nd term, for a total of 320 hours.

The standard SJSU School of Information Grading Scale is utilized for all iSchool courses:

94 to 96 A minus

In order to provide consistent guidelines for assessment for graduate level work in the School, these terms are applied to letter grades:

  • C represents Adequate work; a grade of "C" counts for credit for the course;
  • B represents Good work; a grade of "B" clearly meets the standards for graduate level work;
    For core courses in the MLIS program (not MARA) — INFO 200, INFO 202, INFO 204 — the iSchool requires that students earn a B in the course. If the grade is less than B (B- or lower) after the first attempt you will be placed on administrative probation.  You must repeat the class the following semester. If -on the second attempt- you do not pass the class with a grade of B or better (not B- but B) you will be disqualified.
  • A represents Exceptional work; a grade of "A" will be assigned for outstanding work only.

Students are advised that it is their responsibility to maintain a 3.0 Grade Point Average (GPA).
