Students will be automatically enrolled in the D2L site for this course on August 22, 2011.
Application of cataloging and organization of information principles to multi- and hyper-media resources, complex serial publications, evolving standards for representation of nontraditional networked information, and cataloging policy development. Specific focus of the course may vary each time taught.
Course Prerequisites: LIBR 202, 248
The course is designed to offer you the opportunity to:
- Gain the ability to perform original cataloging for both print and electronic serials, electronic resources, integrating resources, sound recording, videos, and other selected non-print resources
- Create personal name and corporate body authority records according to national cataloging guidelines
- Become more efficient in using LC subject headings, Dewey Decimal Classification and the Library of Congress Classification system for subject cataloging for resources cataloging
- Discuss current developments and possible future directions in cataloging.
- Gain the ability to evaluate cataloging operations to provide efficient solutions to issues and problems
LIBR 249 supports the following SLIS Core Competencies:
- understand the system of standards and methods used to control and create information structures and apply basic principles involved in the organization and representation of knowledge.
In addition, this section supports the following SLIS Core Competencies:
- use the basic concepts and principles related to the creation, evaluation, selection, acquisition, preservation and organization of specific items or collections of information
- design training programs based on appropriate learning principles and theories
- demonstrate oral and written communication skills necessary for group work, collaborations and professional-level presentations
- evaluate programs and services on specified criteria
Optional synchronous virtual classes will be scheduled during the course using the Elluminate software. These classes will be recorded for later viewing. Live attendance is not required or monitored. Instruction on software use will be provided.

The final assignment is designed as a culminating activity to allow students the opportunity to demonstrate proficiency in evaluating the efficiency of cataloging services in a particular library environment.
Attendance and Participation
To receive the most benefit from this course, you must read the text and online resource materials, complete the assignments, and participate in class activities. Regular participation has a positive effect on the course grade earned.
Late Assignments and Incompletes
Late assignments will not be accepted. If you have an illness (medical certificate supplied) or a family tragedy, please contact the instructor. Incomplete grades will not be granted except in extraordinary circumstances. Supporting documentation will be required in cases of medical or health emergencies.
Submission of Assignments
Please submit all assignments via the appropriate D2L Assignment Dropbox.
File names for graded assignments should consist of your last name, the letter A and the number of the exercise such as SmithA1.
Assignments 1 and 5 require use of Powerpoint as an authoring tool.

This measure will cause my email service to prioritize your message to the top of my list of emails. I typically receive between 75-200 emails daily. Using this procedure will certainly increase my response time.
I will attempt to respond to your email messages as soon as possible, typically within 48 hours. If I find that your question/comment would assist other students in the class, I may post it anonymously in the announcements or discussion forum.

In order to provide consistent guidelines for assessment for graduate level work in the School, these terms are applied to letter grades:
- C represents Adequate work; a grade of "C" counts for credit for the course;
- B represents Good work; a grade of "B" clearly meets the standards for graduate level work;
For core courses in the MLIS program (not MARA) — INFO 200, INFO 202, INFO 204 — the iSchool requires that students earn a B in the course. If the grade is less than B (B- or lower) after the first attempt you will be placed on administrative probation. You must repeat the class the following semester. If -on the second attempt- you do not pass the class with a grade of B or better (not B- but B) you will be disqualified.
- A represents Exceptional work; a grade of "A" will be assigned for outstanding work only.
Students are advised that it is their responsibility to maintain a 3.0 Grade Point Average (GPA).
