This course has a D2L site. All students will be enrolled in D2L and notified by the instructor by first day of instruction. 

Course Description

Internship under professional supervision in a selected archives or records center. The internship site must meet criteria outlined in the MARA internship guidelines and be approved by the internship coordinator. Repeatable.

Prerequisite: MARA 200, 202, 204, plus six advanced courses.  Good academic standing.

Course Objectives

Student Learning Outcomes
At the completion of the course, students will be able to:

  1. analyze and discuss how the principles and practices of management, organizational culture and professional-related concerns are applied in a specific archives, records center, or information-based organization
  2. test theories of archival science and recordkeeping and practice skills learned in the program at a specific archives, records center, or information-based organization
  3. each student will also identify a set of learning outcomes specific to his/her practicum site. This should be done in cooperation with the practicum site supervisor 

MARA 294 supports the following MARA Core Competencies:

  • D. Have expertise in the basic concepts and principles used to identify, evaluate, select, organize, maintain, and provide access to records of current and enduring value
  • E. Understand the system of standards and structures endorsed and utilized by the recordkeeping professions, particularly in the areas of digital assets and electronic records managementnbsp;
  • F. Apply fundamental management theories and principles to the administration of records and recordkeeping organizations

Qualifying for the MARA Internship program
To qualify for MARA's Professional internship program, you must:

  1. Be matriculated in the MARA degree program.
  2. Remain in good academic standing.
  3. Have completed MARA 200, 202, 204, and six advanced courses.

Completing the requirements
If you meet the qualifications, you will be registered for MARA 294 and be required to complete 135 hours during one semester at an approved internship site. The internship site must meet criteria outlined in the MARA internship guidelines posted at http://ischool.sjsu.edu/mara/MARA294_guidelines.pdf and be approved by the internship coordinator.

The 135–hour requirement is the equivalent of 9 hours a week, but the scheduling is it is possible to start the internship assignment 2 weeks before the semester begin if this arrangement is approved by the site supervisor and the internship coordinator.

Evaluating the Experience
Several instruments will be used in evaluating your internship performance and experience, some optional and others required. The actual method or combination of methods used for evaluation will depend on your established internship goals, learning outcomes, and assignments. Some or all of the following will be requested upon completion of the internship:

  1. D2L discussion. You will be required enrolled in D2L and participate in the online discussion of the internships.
  2. Blog. This provides a weekly record of activities and an analysis of what was learned, problems encountered, and questions generated.
  3. Final report. At the conclusion of the internship, you are required to submit a final report indicating how the learning outcomes established for the course were met. If for some reason the learning outcomes were only partially met, or not met at all, some discussion of what happened will be necessary.
  4. Site evaluation form. The student evaluation of site form allows you to provide feedback on the internship site's effectiveness in hosting a SLIS intern and to recommend the site’s continuance or discontinuance as an internship site.
  5. Site supervisor's evaluation form. The site supervisor evaluation form will provide formal written feedback by the site supervisor on your internship performance. A portion of your grade will be based on this evaluation.
  6. Additional requirements. In addition to the above, you may also be asked to submit supplemental materials to the faculty supervisor such as written reports, bibliographies or reading lists, portfolios, or samples of professional work.

Note: Students with extensive experience can still learn from working in a completely different setting and interacting with other professionals. Therefore, participation in this Internship program is still required. If you are currently employed in an archives or records center, a placement that will provide you with a rewarding experience in a new setting can be addressed on an individual basis with the Internship coordinator.

Course Calendar
The Practicum must be completed within the semester; dates for submission of the required Practicum documents will be posted in D2L. With prior approval, a student may begin the Practicum up to 2 weeks prior to the beginning of the semester.

Students in MARA 294 will complete readings from textbook used for MARA 293: Chapters 5, 8, 9, 10, 17, 19, and 20.  Students in MARA 294 will continue to meet bi-weekly in Elluminate with members of MARA 295.

A detailed schedule with dates for submission of the required documents and discussion posts will be posted in D2L each term. All assignments are introduced Monday of the week indicated. Blogs and discussions are due the following Sunday, 11:55 p.m. Pacific Standard Time (PST) . Other assignments are due Sunday evening, 11:55 p.m. PST of the week in which they are listed on the schedule. Please complete a SOTE (Student Opinion of Teaching Effectiveness) by 11:55 p.m. on 5/15. Course grades will be available in Angel by 5/18 – or earlier if all work is submitted and graded early. SOTE (Student Opinion of Teaching Effectiveness) due by 11:55 p.m. on 5/15 – Optional but appreciated.

97 to 100 A
94 to 96 A minus
91 to 93 B plus
88 to 90 B
85 to 87 B minus
82 to 84 C plus
79 to 81 C
76 to 78 C minus
73 to 75 D plus
70 to 72 D
67 to 69 D minus
Below 67 F

 

In order to provide consistent guidelines for assessment for graduate level work in the School, these terms are applied to letter grades:

  • C represents Adequate work; a grade of "C" counts for credit for the course;
  • B represents Good work; a grade of "B" clearly meets the standards for graduate level work;
    For core courses in the MLIS program (not MARA) — INFO 200, INFO 202, INFO 204 — the iSchool requires that students earn a B in the course. If the grade is less than B (B- or lower) after the first attempt you will be placed on administrative probation.  You must repeat the class the following semester. If -on the second attempt- you do not pass the class with a grade of B or better (not B- but B) you will be disqualified.
  • A represents Exceptional work; a grade of "A" will be assigned for outstanding work only.

Students are advised that it is their responsibility to maintain a 3.0 Grade Point Average (GPA).

Consent for Recording of Class and Public Sharing of Instructor Material

University Policy S12-7, http://www.sjsu.edu/senate/docs/S12-7.pdf, requires students to obtain instructor's permission to record the course and the following items to be included in the syllabus:

  • "Common courtesy and professional behavior dictate that you notify someone when you are recording him/her. You must obtain the instructor's permission to make audio or video recordings in this class. Such permission allows the recordings to be used for your private, study purposes only. The recordings are the intellectual property of the instructor; you have not been given any rights to reproduce or distribute the material."
    • It is suggested that the syllabus include the instructor's process for granting permission, whether in writing or orally and whether for the whole semester or on a class by class basis.
