Course Description

The Internship is a field-based learning experience that takes place in a public, academic, special library orother information-based organization. It allows the student to obtain work experience while pursuing stated learning outcomes. It is designed to provide the student the opportuity to test tehories and to practice skills learned in the student's program.

These sections are for vitual internship positions only.  It can be taken for 3 units of credit, for which the student will work a minium of 135 hours.

Course Prerequisites: LIBR 200, 202, 204 and three advanced courses required.

Course Objectives

Student Learning Outcomes

  • The student will have an opportunity to analyze and discuss how the principles and practices of management, organizational culture and professional-related concerns are applied in a specific library or information-based organization. 
  • The student will have an opportunity to test theories of library and information science and practice skills learned in the program at a specific library or information-based organization. 
  • Each student will also identify three learning outcomes specific to his/her internship site. This should be done in cooperation with the internship site supervisor. 

LIBR 294 supports the following MLIS Core Competencies:

  • compare the environments and organizational settings in which library and information professionals practice.
  • demonstrate proficiency in the use of current information and communication technologies, and other related technologies, as they affect the resources and uses of libraries and other types of information providing entities.
  • Note: If a student is planning to use the Internship in whole or in part to meet one or more of the competencies needed to complete the MLIS program, he/she should prepare a learning outcome that addresses the area covered by a given competency. This does not mean that the statement of competency can be used for a learning outcome.  An original learning outcome must be developed that will help the student fulfill a given competency through meeting the learing outcome during the internship. 

Course Requirements

The student is required to enroll in the D2L course site and participate in the online discussion of the internship.  Monthly status reports will be required. Instructions will be provided in D2L. 

Web Conferences
Four web conferences will be scheduled throughout the semester.  The student must attend 2 live.  The student will be expected to participate in discussions related to all four conferences posted in D2L.  All sessions will be recorded.  The schedule will be set at the start of the term to accommodate students and faculty.  

The student is required to maintain a web log (blog) of their internship activities.  Hours worked and tasks completed must be included, along with reflections on the experience itself. The student must invite the instructor to the blog, and may or may not decide to invite other students.  Instructions will be provided in D2L.

Deliverable Products for Course Completion
The student is required to submit the following documents upon completion of the internship:

  • Internship Report: Based upon the learning outcomes identified for the internship, the student will prepare a report discussing how those outcomes were (or were not) accomplished. 
  • Site Evaluation Form: This allows the student to provide feedback on their site's effectiveness in hosting SLIS internship students, and recommend the cotinuance or discontinuance of that site.
  • Additional Requirements: The student may be required to submit supplemental materials such as written reports, bibliographies or reading lists, portfolios or samples of professional work to demonstrate achievement of their learning outcomes

Course Calendar
The internship must be completed within the semester the student has registered for LIBR 294; dates for submission of the required Internship documents will be posted in D2L. With prior approval, a student may begin the Internship a few weeks prior to the beginning of the semester. 

Course Grading
This course is graded as Credit or No Credit. Incompletes are considered on a case-by-case basis, and are given only for family or personal emergency situations.  Read more information aboutincompletes.

Consent for Recording of Class and Public Sharing of Instructor Material

University Policy S12-7,, requires students to obtain instructor's permission to record the course and the following items to be included in the syllabus:

  • "Common courtesy and professional behavior dictate that you notify someone when you are recording him/her. You must obtain the instructor's permission to make audio or video recordings in this class. Such permission allows the recordings to be used for your private, study purposes only. The recordings are the intellectual property of the instructor; you have not been given any rights to reproduce or distribute the material."
    • It is suggested that the syllabus include the instructor's process for granting permission, whether in writing or orally and whether for the whole semester or on a class by class basis.
    • In classes where active participation of students or guests may be on the recording, permission of those students or guests should be obtained as well.
  • "Course material developed by the instructor is the intellectual property of the instructor and cannot be shared publicly without his/her approval. You may not publicly share or upload instructor generated material for this course such as exam questions, lecture notes, or homework solutions without instructor consent."
