Course Description

Identifying distinguishing characteristics, culture and relationships of information organizations. Emphasizes theories examining the interaction between human beings and the organizations in which they work.

Effective Spring 2009, must be completed with a grade of B or better. If the grade is less than B (B- or lower) you must repeat the class the following semester.

Course Requirements

Assignments
Assignments submitted after the due date will be subject to a 10% per day grade penalty. No assignment will be accepted more than one week late without prior instructor approval. No assignments will be accepted after the last day of class (May 15) except in the case of extreme emergency and appropriate documentation will be required.

  • Discussion Board – 45 points (15 weekly assignments @ 3 points)
    Each student will be expected to interact and participate using D2L’s Discussion Forums. Discussions will be organized around lectures, readings and occasional questions that I may bring about a specific topic. More information can be found in the Assignments section of D2L under Participation. This assignment is linked to the "1. Compare management theories, principles and practices", the "3. Identify the roles and activities of managers", "4. Identify portfolios as a means of performance assessment." and the "6. Recognize issues of diversity in the workplace" Student Learning Outcomes.
    Due: Weekly
  • Critical Summary– 35 points
    You will write a 250 – 300 word critical essay (also called an annotated bibliography) of a management article of your choice chosen from the list of journals included on the assignment page. This assignment is linked to the "8. Review, use and properly cite the professional and research literature of management and leadership" Student Learning Outcome.

  • Analyzing Library/Information Center Services through Marketing Materials - 50 points
    Pay a visit to one library, gather at least three different publications used for marketing (or two print and no more than one online), and analyze the references to services in those publications. The marketing materials can include brochures, announcements of meetings held at their facilities, invitations to open houses, etc. Then, in three pages with a maximum of five pages, describe the marketing materials you have analyzed for this assignment. This assignment is linked to the "3. Identify the roles and activities of managers and leaders" Student Learning Outcome.
     
  • Change Management - 50 points
    Develop a three to five page paper based on the book "Who Moved My Cheese?" by Spencer Johnson. This assignment will give you an opportunity to consider the importance of change and to examine issues related to managing change for staff and services in a diverse society. In contrast to the strategic planning team assignment, which emphasizes planning initiatives for the overall organization, the focus of the organizational change assignment is to study and understand how practitioners might initiate change at the individual level. This assignment is linked to the "3. Identify the roles and activities of managers and leaders" Student Learning Outcome.

  • Resume Assignment – 20 points.
    During the course of the semester you will create a resume (or update the one that you already have) and develop a cover letter. This assignment is linked to the "7. Prepare a resume and consult career development resources" Student Learning Outcome.

  • Strategic Plan (Group Project) – 100 points
    This is a collaborative project. Groups will form to explore a particular organizational setting in depth and prepare a strategic plan. In addition to the plan, at the end of the term you will submit an assessment of your team members contributions. This assignment is linked to the "2. Understand analytical and strategic planning processes and skills" and the "5. Experience and assess working in teams" Student Learning Outcomes.

Writing Requirement
If an instructor finds that a student's writing ability is unacceptable the instructor will require the student to sign up for online writing tutoring. The student will ask the tutor to confirm with the instructor that the student is attending sessions.

Course Workload Expectations

Success in this course is based on the expectation that students will spend, for each unit of credit, a minimum of forty-five hours over the length of the course (normally 3 hours per unit per week with 1 of the hours used for lecture) for instruction or preparation/studying or course related activities including but not limited to internships, labs, clinical practica. Other course structures will have equivalent workload expectations as described in the syllabus.

Instructional time may include but is not limited to:
Working on posted modules or lessons prepared by the instructor; discussion forum interactions with the instructor and/or other students; making presentations and getting feedback from the instructor; attending office hours or other synchronous sessions with the instructor.

Student time outside of class:
In any seven-day period, a student is expected to be academically engaged through submitting an academic assignment; taking an exam or an interactive tutorial, or computer-assisted instruction; building websites, blogs, databases, social media presentations; attending a study group;contributing to an academic online discussion; writing papers; reading articles; conducting research; engaging in small group work.

Course Prerequisites

LIBR 204 has no prequisite requirements.

The standard SJSU School of Information Grading Scale is utilized for all iSchool courses:

97 to 100 A
94 to 96 A minus
91 to 93 B plus
88 to 90 B
85 to 87 B minus
82 to 84 C plus
79 to 81 C
76 to 78 C minus
73 to 75 D plus
70 to 72 D
67 to 69 D minus
Below 67 F

 

In order to provide consistent guidelines for assessment for graduate level work in the School, these terms are applied to letter grades:

  • C represents Adequate work; a grade of "C" counts for credit for the course;
  • B represents Good work; a grade of "B" clearly meets the standards for graduate level work;
    For core courses in the MLIS program (not MARA) — INFO 200, INFO 202, INFO 204 — the iSchool requires that students earn a B in the course. If the grade is less than B (B- or lower) after the first attempt you will be placed on administrative probation.  You must repeat the class the following semester. If -on the second attempt- you do not pass the class with a grade of B or better (not B- but B) you will be disqualified.
  • A represents Exceptional work; a grade of "A" will be assigned for outstanding work only.

Students are advised that it is their responsibility to maintain a 3.0 Grade Point Average (GPA).

Consent for Recording of Class and Public Sharing of Instructor Material

University Policy S12-7, http://www.sjsu.edu/senate/docs/S12-7.pdf, requires students to obtain instructor's permission to record the course and the following items to be included in the syllabus:

  • "Common courtesy and professional behavior dictate that you notify someone when you are recording him/her. You must obtain the instructor's permission to make audio or video recordings in this class. Such permission allows the recordings to be used for your private, study purposes only. The recordings are the intellectual property of the instructor; you have not been given any rights to reproduce or distribute the material."
    • It is suggested that the syllabus include the instructor's process for granting permission, whether in writing or orally and whether for the whole semester or on a class by class basis.
    • In classes where active participation of students or guests may be on the recording, permission of those students or guests should be obtained as well.
