D2L Login and Tutorials
D2L Information: This course will be available beginning Thurs., January 23, and end on Tuesday, May 13. You will be enrolled into the site automatically the first day of the term. To access the course, log into MySJSU on Thursday, January 23, and look for the link to SP14 LIBR 294.
The Internship is a field-based learning experience that takes place in a library, archives, records center, or other information-based organization. It allows the student to obtain work experience while pursuing stated learning outcomes. It is designed to provide the student the opportunity to test theories and to practice skills learned in the student's program.
These sections are for virtual internship positions only. They can be taken for 2, 3, or 4 units of credit, for which the student will work a minimum of 45 hours per unit of credit.
The student is required to access materials posted to the D2L course site and participate in online discussions of topics related to the internship experience. Monthly status reports will be required. Instructions will be provided in D2L.
Five optional web conferences will be scheduled throughout the semester. The schedule will be set at the start of the term to accommodate students and faculty. All sessions will be recorded. Students may substitute attendance at any web conference(s) for the discussions taking place in D2L the same week.
The student is required to maintain a web log (blog) of their internship activities. Hours worked and tasks completed must be included, along with reflections on the experience itself. The student must invite the instructor to the blog, and may or may not decide to invite other students and/or the site supervisor. Instructions will be provided in D2L.
Deliverable Products for Course Completion
The student is required to submit the following documents upon completion of the internship:
- Internship Report: Based upon the learning outcomes identified for the internship, the student will prepare a report discussing how those outcomes were (or were not) accomplished and include additional information requested. Details will be provided in D2L.
- Site Evaluation Form: This allows the student to provide feedback on their site's effectiveness in hosting SLIS internship students and recommend the continuance or discontinuance of that site.
- Additional Requirements: The student may be required to submit supplemental materials such as written reports, bibliographies or reading lists, portfolios or samples of professional work to demonstrate achievement of their learning outcomes
- Site Supervisor Evaluation Form for Student: Although it is the site supervisor's responsibility to complete the online evaluation form of the student, the student is ultimately responsible to make sure the site supervsior does submit the evaluation.
The internship must be completed within the semester the student has registered for LIBR 294; dates for submission of the required Internship documents will be posted in D2L. With prior approval, a student may begin the Internship a few weeks prior to the beginning of the semester.
This course is graded as Credit or No Credit. Incompletes are considered on a case-by-case basis and are given only for family or personal emergency situations. Read more information about incompletes.
Course Workload Expectations
Success in this course is based on the expectation that students will spend, for each unit of credit, a minimum of forty-five hours over the length of the course (normally 3 hours per unit per week with 1 of the hours used for lecture) for instruction or preparation/studying or course related activities including but not limited to internships, labs, clinical practica. Other course structures will have equivalent workload expectations as described in the syllabus.
Instructional time may include but is not limited to:
Working on posted modules or lessons prepared by the instructor; discussion forum interactions with the instructor and/or other students; making presentations and getting feedback from the instructor; attending office hours or other synchronous sessions with the instructor.
Student time outside of class:
In any seven-day period, a student is expected to be academically engaged through submitting an academic assignment; taking an exam or an interactive tutorial, or computer-assisted instruction; building websites, blogs, databases, social media presentations; attending a study group;contributing to an academic online discussion; writing papers; reading articles; conducting research; engaging in small group work.
LIBR 200, LIBR 202, LIBR 204, LIBR 203, and three elective courses. Students must be in good academic standing [3.0 CUM GPA or above and no outstanding incompletes].
Student Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of the course, students will be able to:
- Identify a set of learning outcomes specific to his/her internship site. This should be done in cooperation with the internship site supervisor.
- Analyze and discuss how the principles and practices of management, organizational culture and professional-related concerns are applied in a specific archives or information-based organization.
- Test theories of library and information science and practice skills learned in the program at a specific archives or information-based organization.
Core Competencies (Program Learning Outcomes)
LIBR 294 supports the following core competencies:
- If the student is planning to use the internship in whole or in part to meet one or more of the competencies needed to complete the program, he/she should prepare a learning outcome that addresses the area covered by a given competency. This does not mean that the statement of competency can be used for a learning outcome. An original learning outcome must be developed that will help the student fulfill a given competency through meeting the learning outcome during the internship.

Consent for Recording of Class and Public Sharing of Instructor Material
University Policy S12-7, http://www.sjsu.edu/senate/docs/S12-7.pdf, requires students to obtain instructor's permission to record the course and the following items to be included in the syllabus:
- "Common courtesy and professional behavior dictate that you notify someone when you are recording him/her. You must obtain the instructor's permission to make audio or video recordings in this class. Such permission allows the recordings to be used for your private, study purposes only. The recordings are the intellectual property of the instructor; you have not been given any rights to reproduce or distribute the material."
