Course Description

Identifying distinguishing characteristics, culture and relationships of information organizations. Emphasizes theories examining the interaction between human beings and the organizations in which they work.

Course Prerequisites: Students will have completed the new student technology workshop and have the specified minimum hardware and software to participate fully in the course.

  • Compare management theories, principles and practices;
  • Understand analytical and strategic planning processes and skills;
  • Identify the roles and activities of managers and leaders;
  • Identify portfolios as a means of performance assessment;
  • Experience and assess working in teams;
  • Recognize issues of diversity in the workplace;
  • Prepare a resume and consult career development resources;
  • Review, use and properly cite the professional and research literature of management and leadership.

LIBR 204 supports the following SLIS Core Competencies:

  • Apply the fundamental principles of planning, management and marketing/advocacy; 
  • Demonstrate oral and written communication skills necessary for group work, collaborations and professional level presentations;
  • Evaluate programs and services on specified criteria.

Course Requirements

Complete LIBR 203: Online Social Networking: Technology and Tools
This is a mandatory 1 unit course that introduces students to the various e-learning tools used in the SLIS program, including Angel, Elluminate and Second Life. This course must be completed by all new SLIS students within the first 4 weeks of their first semester. If you have questions about this course, e-mail Debbie Faires or Dale David.

Assignments must be submitted by noon on the date due. Plan ahead because Angel could malfunction at any time. Assignments submitted after the due date will be subject to a 10% per day grade penalty. No assignment will be accepted more than one week late without prior instructor approval. No assignments will be accepted after the last day of class (December 9) except in the case of extreme emergency and appropriate documentation will be required.

  • Discussion Board – 45 points (15 weekly assignments @ 3 points)
    Each student will be expected to interact and participate using Angel’s Message Boards. Discussions will be organized around lectures, readings and occasional questions that I may bring about a specific topic. Students will be expected to attend at least one other group’s Strategic Plan presentation in addition to thir own. More information can be found in the Assignments section of Angel. This assignment is linked to the "Compare management theories, principles and practices", the "Identify the roles and activities of managers", and the "Managing issues of diversity in the workplace" learning outcomes.
    Due: Weekly on Friday by noon
  • Critical Summary– 35 points
    You will write a 250 – 300 word critical essay (also called an annotated bibliography) of a management article of your choice chosen from the list of journals included on the assignment page. This assignment is linked to the "Review, use and properly cite the professional and research literature of management and leadership" learning outcome.
    Due: Friday, February 11 by noon.
  • Analyzing Library/Information Center Services through Marketing Materials - 50 points
    Pay a visit to one library, gather at least three different publications used for marketing (or two print and no more than one online), and analyze the references to services in those publications. The marketing materials can include brochures, announcements of meetings held at their facilities, invitations to open houses, etc. Then, in three pages with a maximum of five pages, describe the marketing materials you have analyzed for this assignment. This assignment is linked to the "Identify the roles and activities of managers and leaders" learning outcome.
    Due: Friday, March 4 by noon
  • Change Management - 50 points
    Develop a three to five page paper based on the book "Who Moved My Cheese?" by Spencer Johnson. This assignment will give you an opportunity to consider the importance of change and to examine issues related to managing change for staff and services in a diverse society. In contrast to the strategic planning team assignment, which emphasizes planning initiatives for the overall organization, the focus of the organizational change assignment is to study and understand how practitioners might initiate change at the individual level. This assignment is linked to the "Identify the roles and activities of managers and leaders" learning outcome.
    Due: Friday, March 25 by noon
  • e-Portfolio and Resume Assignment – 20 points.
    During the course of the semester you will create a resume (or update the one that you already have). You will also develop an e-portfolio entry and tie an appropriate LIBR 204 assignment to one of the LIBR 204 Core Competencies. You will develop a Statement of Competency referring to the evidence you selected. Demonstrate that you understand the concept(s) involved and explain how/why your assignment applies to the competency. This assignment is linked to the "Identify portfolios as a means of performance assessment" and the "Prepare a resume and consult career development resources" learning outcomes.
    Due: Friday, April 15 by noon
  • Strategic Plan (Group Project) – 100 points
    This is a collaborative project. Groups will form to explore a particular organizational setting in depth and prepare a strategic plan.  In addition to the plan, at the end of the term you will submit an assessment of your team members contributions. This assignment is linked to the "Understand analytical and strategic planning processes and skills" and the "Experience and assess working in teams" learning outcomes.
    Due: Friday, May 6 by noon

Writing Requirement
If an instructor finds that a student's writing ability is unacceptable the instructor will require the student to sign up for online writing tutoring. The student will ask the tutor to confirm with the instructor that the student is attending sessions.

Grading Scale

The standard SJSU School of Information Grading Scale is utilized for all iSchool courses:

97 to 100 A
94 to 96 A minus
91 to 93 B plus
88 to 90 B
85 to 87 B minus
82 to 84 C plus
79 to 81 C
76 to 78 C minus
73 to 75 D plus
70 to 72 D
67 to 69 D minus
Below 67 F


In order to provide consistent guidelines for assessment for graduate level work in the School, these terms are applied to letter grades:

  • C represents Adequate work; a grade of "C" counts for credit for the course;
  • B represents Good work; a grade of "B" clearly meets the standards for graduate level work;
    For core courses in the MLIS program (not MARA) — INFO 200, INFO 202, INFO 204 — the iSchool requires that students earn a B in the course. If the grade is less than B (B- or lower) after the first attempt you will be placed on administrative probation.  You must repeat the class the following semester. If -on the second attempt- you do not pass the class with a grade of B or better (not B- but B) you will be disqualified.
  • A represents Exceptional work; a grade of "A" will be assigned for outstanding work only.

Students are advised that it is their responsibility to maintain a 3.0 Grade Point Average (GPA).

Consent for Recording of Class and Public Sharing of Instructor Material

University Policy S12-7,, requires students to obtain instructor's permission to record the course and the following items to be included in the syllabus:

  • "Common courtesy and professional behavior dictate that you notify someone when you are recording him/her. You must obtain the instructor's permission to make audio or video recordings in this class. Such permission allows the recordings to be used for your private, study purposes only. The recordings are the intellectual property of the instructor; you have not been given any rights to reproduce or distribute the material."
    • It is suggested that the syllabus include the instructor's process for granting permission, whether in writing or orally and whether for the whole semester or on a class by class basis.
    • In classes where active participation of students or guests may be on the recording, permission of those students or guests should be obtained as well.
  • "Course material developed by the instructor is the intellectual property of the instructor and cannot be shared publicly without his/her approval. You may not publicly share or upload instructor generated material for this course such as exam questions, lecture notes, or homework solutions without instructor consent."
