Students will be instructor-enrolled in the Canvas site for the course and notified on June 1, 2014.  The Canvas course will be available on June 2, 2014.  This course uses a special consolidated Canvas site for every intern enrolled in all sections of LIBR 294 under my supervision.

Course Description

The Internship course is a field-based learning experience that takes place in a library, archives or other information-based organization. It allows the student to obtain work experience while pursuing stated learning outcomes. It is designed to provide the student the opportunity to test theories and to practice skills learned in the student’s program.

The Internship course is 2, 3 or 4 units, each unit equivalent to 45 hours (minimum) of on-site or virtual work.

Course Requirements

Canvas
The student is required to utilize the Canvas course site and participate in the online discussion of the internship.

Deliverable Products
The student is required to submit portions of the following document three times during the term in which the internship takes place:

  • Internship Log: The student will maintain an on-going record of his/her activities for the internship. Further information regarding the internship log will be available on the Canvas site.
  • Internship Log Digest Post: The student will be required to recreate/summarize and share their internship log via three discussion posts which encompass the work to date and describe progress toward Learning Outcomes. Further information regarding the internship log posts will be available on the Canvas site. Each post is submitted via a Canvas Discussion Board.

The student is required to submit the following documents upon completion of the internship:

  • Internship Final Report: Based upon the learning outcomes identified for the internship, the student will prepare a report discussing how those outcomes were (or were not) accomplished. This report is submitted via a Canvas Dropbox.
  • Site Evaluation Form: This allows the student to provide feedback on their site’s effectiveness in hosting SLIS internship students, and recommend the continuance or discontinuance of that site. This is a web-based form.
  • Site Supervisor Evaluation Form: This allows the Site Supervisor to provide feedback on their student intern and the achievement of learning outcomes, and recommend the awarding of course credit. This is a web-based form generated each semester a site has an Active internship filled.
  • Additional Requirements: The student may be required to submit supplemental materials such as their complete log, written reports, bibliographies or reading lists, portfolios or samples of professional work to demonstrate achievement of their learning outcomes.

Course Calendar
The Internship must be completed within the semester the student has registered for LIBR 294. With prior approval, a student may begin the Internship prior to the beginning of the semester, but under no circumstances will a student be permitted to begin more than two weeks prior to the official first day of classes.  Students are expected to do some internship work every week of the term and are not permitted to end their internship early.  Concentrating hours may result in lost credit.

Internship log posts (via Discussion Board on Canvas) are due on Fridays: June 20, Jul 11, Aug 1.

All Internship work hours must be complete by the last day of instruction, Aug 8.

Internship Final Report is due on or before Monday, Aug 11.

All submission deadlines are by 11:59 p.m. PST.

Due dates for all Internship documents will also be posted on the Canvas Course Calendar. In the case of a discrepancy between the Greensheet and the Canvas Course Calendar, the Greensheet shall prevail.

Required Readings
There is no required text for this course. Some internship sites do require that interns do reading and orientation activities prior to working.

There are important documents posted on the Canvas site that you must be aware of and utilize in the course. The Canvas LIBR 294 Home Page will introduce you to the structure of the Canvas site.

Course Workload Expectations

Success in this course is based on the expectation that students will spend, for each unit of credit, a minimum of forty-five hours over the length of the course (normally 3 hours per unit per week with 1 of the hours used for lecture) for instruction or preparation/studying or course related activities including but not limited to internships, labs, clinical practica. Other course structures will have equivalent workload expectations as described in the syllabus.

Instructional time may include but is not limited to:
Working on posted modules or lessons prepared by the instructor; discussion forum interactions with the instructor and/or other students; making presentations and getting feedback from the instructor; attending office hours or other synchronous sessions with the instructor.

Student time outside of class:
In any seven-day period, a student is expected to be academically engaged through submitting an academic assignment; taking an exam or an interactive tutorial, or computer-assisted instruction; building websites, blogs, databases, social media presentations; attending a study group;contributing to an academic online discussion; writing papers; reading articles; conducting research; engaging in small group work.

Course Prerequisites

LIBR 200, LIBR 202, LIBR 203, LIBR 204, and three elective courses. Students must be in good academic standing [3.0 CUM GPA or above and no outstanding incompletes]

Student Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of the course, students will be able to:

  1. Identify a set of learning outcomes specific to his/her internship site. This should be done in cooperation with the internship site supervisor.
  2. Analyze and discuss how the principles and practices of management, organizational culture and professional-related concerns are applied in a specific archives or information-based organization.
  3. Test theories of library and information science and practice skills learned in the program at a specific archives or information-based organization.

Core Competencies (Program Learning Outcomes)

LIBR 294 supports the following core competencies:

  1. If the student is planning to use the internship in whole or in part to meet one or more of the competencies needed to complete the program, he/she should prepare a learning outcome that addresses the area covered by a given competency. This does not mean that the statement of competency can be used for a learning outcome. An original learning outcome must be developed that will help the student fulfill a given competency through meeting the learning outcome during the internship.

This is a Credit/No Credit course. Incompletes are considered on a case-by-case basis, and are given for family or work emergency situations.

Consent for Recording of Class and Public Sharing of Instructor Material

University Policy S12-7, http://www.sjsu.edu/senate/docs/S12-7.pdf, requires students to obtain instructor's permission to record the course and the following items to be included in the syllabus:

  • "Common courtesy and professional behavior dictate that you notify someone when you are recording him/her. You must obtain the instructor's permission to make audio or video recordings in this class. Such permission allows the recordings to be used for your private, study purposes only. The recordings are the intellectual property of the instructor; you have not been given any rights to reproduce or distribute the material."
    • It is suggested that the syllabus include the instructor's process for granting permission, whether in writing or orally and whether for the whole semester or on a class by class basis.
    • In classes where active participation of students or guests may be on the recording, permission of those students or guests should be obtained as well.
